Rubies Have a Rich History
The word ruby comes from the ancient Latin word ruber, which translates to red. The bright stones appear to glow from within, and many philosophers, religious figures and people throughout history have sought these beautiful gemstones. Some records find that rubies were traded on the Silk Road in China as far back as 200 BC.
Rubies have been treasured throughout history, and their usage in jewelry dates back to ancient cultures. The stones are mentioned four times in the Bible and associated with wisdom and beauty. In early Hindu culture, people who offered rubies up to the god Krishna were believed to be given a new life as an emperor. In Burma, warriors would bring rubies into battles because they believed that they would be protected from serious harm as a result.
In ancient times, many people believed that wearing a ruby over their hearts would help them to live peaceful and protected lives. Because the stones were seen as very powerful, these people even thought that their homes and property would be protected as long as they were wearing the stone. Other folklore claimed that rubies could heal different blood-related problems or help to regulate body temperature. In the Middle Ages, lore held that authentic rubies could boil a pot of water due to the “fire” within them, and that if they were hidden in a bag or wrapped up, the light from the ruby would shine through like a torch.
The majority of rubies hailed from Burma for thousands of years, until Myanmar began harvesting them in the 1990s. Burmese rubies are considered to be the most highly prized, as they have a deep and rich red hue. However, some other rubies are heat treated to mimic the saturation level of Burmese rubies.
